Will UN peacekeeping force help Darfur?

The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution authorising the deployment of some 26,000 peacekeepers - the largest ever contingent - to the Sudanese region of Darfur.

The resolution, passed by unanimous vote is aimed at halting violence that has killed at least 200,000 and forced 2m others from their homes since 2003.

The resolution authorises the deployment of a joint UN-African Union force to defend civilians and aid workers in Darfur from any attack.

The U.N. Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, called it an "historic and unprecedented resolution".
